Two new projects approved

The Council of Ministers approved on 23 July 2019 the start of two projects in the areas of electricity and natural gas processing in Maputo province.

The construction, in Beluluane, Boane district, of a thermoelectric power station with the capacity to generate 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity and the installation, in Porto da Matola, of infrastructure for storage, regasification and export handling. of liquefied natural gas.

The two projects, to be materialized within five years, are valued at US $ 2.8 billion and will generate 1700 jobs during construction and 1050 permanent jobs in the exploration phase, according to the spokeswoman for the 24th Council of Ministers session, held in Maputo city.

Both projects include the construction of a gas pipeline linking Matola Port and Beluluane Thermoelectric Power Station, which will generate energy from natural gas, in volumes approaching the production of the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The decrees give Beluluane Gas Company SA, a new company emerged from the expansion plans of Matola Gas Company (MGC) SA, a 30-year concession for the financing, construction and operation of ventures, specifically sale and export. electricity and / or natural gas.

In the first phase, the plant will be able to consume imported gas, but when Rovuma Basin projects are able they can also operate on the national resource basis.
